Ask Dr. Su Yeong Kim – Your Guide to PhDs, Research Publications and Academia

Dr. Su Yeong Kim is a thought leader and recognized scholar researching child development in immigrant families with a focus on cultural, familial, and linguistic influences. She also serves as Professor of Human Development and Family Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin and as the Editor for the Journal of Research on Adolescence. Previously, she has held the position of editor for Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, and Associate Editor for Developmental Psychology. Dr. Kim is also a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and the Asian American Psychological Association. 

Dr. Kim’s research studies the influence of cultural heritage and acculturation in the development of children and adolescents in immigrant families. She has developed a theoretical framework on bilingualism that integrates language proficiency, use, and subjective experience, which has since become internationally recognized. 

In addition to having over 170 publications and receiving support from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Spencer Foundation, and Russell Sage Foundation, Dr. Kim continues to make lasting impact through passionate mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students. She prioritizes inclusion, particularly, for first-generation and underrepresented students, many of whom gain their first exposure to research under her guidance.

Dr. Kim has been honored with the APA Division 45 Distinguished Career Contributions to Research Award and recognized by UT Austin for excellence in leadership, mentorship, and service. Her impact includes leading a culturally responsive afterschool language brokering program for middle school students, practically applying her research for the public good.
